Just quietly – I’m having a love affair. Darling T, don’t be alarmed, it’s with a place not a person.
For many, many years I had cast dark aspersions upon these places. I’d been told by my mother that they were dirty and not to be frequented.
Over the years I have tried very hard to examine any judgemental thoughts I hold, on all subjects, questioning if they are my own conclusions, rather than accepting myths of long ago as truth so it always surprises me, when one lurks from around the corner and bites me on the arse.
Where is this place you ask?
One day I was standing about at school pick up time, whinging to a friend about trying to wash quilts at the end of the season. (Please note: This is not an exercise I’d generally been undertaking at the end of each season, the quilts were a little ponky, hence the whinging) , she gave me The Look – Geez, I seem to attract them, and said,
“Kath, you have a great laundromat at the end of your street, why aren’t you taking them there?” I immediately turned up my nose and retorted, “Ugg, laundromats, they are dirty places.” Then of course I had to admit I have never stepped foot in one. Hmm, a light bulb moment, maybe this judgement missed being culled, and needed to be assessed.
So down the street I wandered and into the Laundromat.
What did I find?
A bank of gleaming clean washing machines, that to be honest, look like they have their lint filters cleaned more often than my own. Enormous machines that happily contain my quilt and sheets, huge dryers that fit loads of things and dry fast!
In winter, I often just use the dryers, I can solve the problem of my house looking like a Chinese Laundry for the week for $5 and 35 min peace and quiet, in a warm environment. I refuse to allow any children to accompany me, instead, I take a book and relish in the lack of demands from anyone for toasted cheese sandwiches. Sometimes take a coffee with me, so I feel as though I have had a real outing.
So lovely readers, have you discovered any weird judgments of your own, based purely on myth? Are there any places in your life you are surprised to find you secretly love? Let me know in the comments below!
